Trumpet for announcing the commencement of Shabbat. Haifa, [ca.1940s].
Trumpet (blurred maker's mark, "Tel-Aviv").
From the days of the Second Temple it was customary to announce the commencement of Shabbat on Friday evening by blowing a Shofar or a trumpet.
In Haifa, starting in the 1920s, this custom was resumed. In the earlier days, a carriage traveled the city bearing a flag “Remember the Shabbat to keep it Holy”. In the 1940s the carriage was replaced by a taxi, and young boys were driven through the neighborhoods, blowing the trumpet to announce the commencement of Shabbat. The trumpet presented here was used for this purpose, see photo.
Length: 55 cm. Good condition. Bendings.

Shofar and a black military beret with an Etzel pin, from the estate of Etzel fighter Israel Hadany (Klein).
The Shofar and the beret were used by Etzel fighter Israel Hadany (Klein), in 1941 as described in the book "Shofarot shel Mered" (Ze'ev Golan, Jabotinsky Institute, 2007), (p.33, 106-107). Hadany blew the Shofar at the Western Wall as part of a protest, where “Teki’a Gedolah” was blown when Yom Kippur ended. The protest was held against the British mandate which forbade public religious rituals by the Western Wall. The blowers and their assistants, Beitar and Etzel members, smuggled shofarot in an operation know as “Hakir” (the wall). The operation was held in order to mock the prestige of the British mandate and to strengthen the national pride.
Shofar: 21 cm, pin: 1 cm. Good condition.
