Two leaves (2 pages) handwritten by R. Shimshon Rafael Hirsch – two articles published in the Jeschurun periodical, 15th April 1855. [Frankfurt, 1855]. German and bit of Hebrew.
Articles on current matters, handwritten by R. Shimshon Rafael Hirsch (with deletions and emendations), for publication in Jeschurun, an Orthodox periodical which he founded and published between 1854-1888, and which served as the main platform for his German essays.
The first article is a follow-up of a previous article published in Jeschurun, regarding rumors that the Ottoman Sultan issued a decree regarding head-coverings worn by Jewish women in the Ottoman Empire.
In the second article, R. Hirsch decries a governmental order to place the Jews in Lower Franconia under unparalleled surveillance. R. Hirsch writes that in light of such a decree, it is not surprising that Jews seek the freedom found across the ocean, in the United States.
Several lines deleted by R. Hirsch in this manuscript were not published.
R. Shimshon son of R. Rafael Hirsch (1808-1888), legendary leader of German Orthodox Jewry, renowned for his efforts to stem the rapid spiritual decline of German Jewry, by establishing independent Orthodox communities and through his sermons, books and articles.
