The book includes poems and illustrations by Mayakovsky, created during his work on the "ROSTA Windows" (Окна РОСТА) posters. In the original cover. Book designed by Varvara Stepanova (Варвара Фёдоровна Степанова; 1894-1958), Russian artist, designer, and poet, one of the prominent figures in the Constructivist movement of the early 20th century in Russia. She was the wife of Alexander Rodchenko.
The posters of РОСТА (acronym for Российское телеграфное агентство – Russian Telegraph Agency) were a large-scale medium used by the authorities of Soviet Russia between 1919 and 1921 to spread propaganda during the Russian Civil War. Among the artists who created posters for ROSTA are Mayakovsky, Lebedev, Malevich, and many others.
