Portrait of Börne in a decorated frame within which appear his gravestone in Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris and the relief on the stone (created by David d'Angers), depicting France and Germany shaking hands with the blessing of Liberty who stands between them.
Karl Ludwig Börne (Yehudah Loeb Baruch, 1786-1837), author, journalist, literary and theater critic, born in Frankfurt and active in Germany and France. Even though he converted to Christianity, he often wrote political essays in defense of his Jewish brethren. He was an opponent of Johan Wolfgang von Goethe and Heinrich Heine, and was known for introducing the term "Spring of Nations".

An illustration (engraving) is printed in the center, depicting the "Wandering Jew" at the entrance to a tavern; a poem in French is printed around the image, telling the story of the Wandering Jew.
The Bouquet family from Rouen in France was a family of artists engaged in engraving and printing on fabric in the 19th century. The illustrator of this handkerchief is, presumably, Narcisse-Alexandre Buquet (1825-1894).
