Manuscript, Hosha'anot for Succot, with the commentary by Rabbi Yitzchak Vene and his disciple Rabbi Yehiya son of R' Yosef Tzalach (Salah), the Maharitz, in the handwriting of the Maharitz. Yemen, [18th century].
Complete manuscript (without a title page), in small format. Neat, particularly elegant Yemenite handwriting, characteristic to the handwriting of the Maharitz. The commentary of the Maharitz appears below the vowelized text of the Hosha'anot. The titles and initials are decorated with red ink throughout the entire manuscript.
At the end of the work is a colophon signed by the Maharitz: "So far what I saw to write according to my limited knowledge and understanding…Yichiya son of R' Yosef son of R' Tzalach".
The Maharitz based his composition on the commentary of Rabbi Yitzchak Vene, and writes in his introduction: "…Know that most of the commentary of the Hosha'anot are based on the commentary of R' Yitzchak Vene. However, in a few places, he did not explain all that is necessary due to our limited understanding…and the fact that for him they are simple, and I explained them …". This composition eventually became part of the Tiklal siddur with his Etz Chaim commentary, with variations. Apparently, this is the Mahadura Kama (first edition) of the composition.
At the end of the manuscript [7] leaves were added, with "a blessing to the public after Simchat Torah". Possibly, these leaves are also in the handwriting of the Maharitz. Several leaves have marginalia from a later time.
Rabbi Yehiya son of R' Yosef Tzalach (Salah) - the Maharitz (1715-1805), was the most notable Yemenite rabbi in the 18th century and one of the leading Poskim Acharonim. Disciple of his grandfather Mari Tzalach and disciple of Rabbi Aharon HaCohen Araki, Rabbi Yechiya Araki and Rabbi David Mashraki, author of Shetilei Zetim. At the age of 43, he was appointed Chief Rabbi and Ra'avad of all Yemenite communities, a position he held for more than 45 years. His authority was unequivocally accepted in Yemen and until this day, many members of the Yemenite community follow his customs and rulings. He compiled the Tiklal siddur with the Etz Chaim commentary and many halachic works: Zevach Todah, Sha'arei Kedusha on the laws of shechita, Sha'arei Tahara on the laws of Nidah, Pe'ulat Tzaddik responsa and other books of halacha, mussar and Kabbalah.
[1], [42]; [7] leaves. 15 cm. (wide margins). Good condition. Stains. Worming. Without original title page (replaced by an illustrated title page created at a later time). New leather binding.

Collection of leaf fragments, letters, and sections of manuscripts - mussar and halachic compositions, Midrashim and Bible translations, Mishnayot and Talmud, prayers and siddurim, song books and piyyutim, amulets and segulot [Yemen and Oriental countries, various times - 17th century until the 20th century].
Among the sections of the Midrashim in the collection: · Three sections of leaves from Midrash HaBe'ur by Rabbi Se'adya son of David called Aldamari. Parshat Vayera, Parshat Ki Tisa and a section of the Haftarah of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. · Section from Midrash Ma'ase B'Rav Kahana U'Slik Beno - [cited in Batei Midrashot Part 1 Page 307]. · Large leaf from an unknown Midrash with the tale of a king who gave his son all the keys to the palace with the exception of the key to one door and another tale. · Binding Geniza - evidently a Midrash in Arabic. · Section of Midrash Tehillim Chapter 2. · Page of Pesikta Rabati, Parsha 37. · 4 leaves of Pirkei D'Rabbi Eliezer Chapters 28, 29 and 36. · Leaf of Midrash HaChefetz Parshat Bereshit. · Last leaf of Midrash HaGadol, Parshat V'Zot HaBeracha. With scribe's colophon erroneously dated: "…This Midrash with G-d's help, Wednesday, 12th day of the month of Av should change to joy and happiness 1252…Aharon son of Shlomo son of Chalfon son of Avigad Altvili". [An erasure on the date of the colophon can be discerned, but another owner's colophon in a different writing appears on the same page with the date "The month of Tishrei 1281". This is not viable since the scribe who signed the colophon, "Aharon son of Shlomo Tvili" lived in 1644. (See enclosed photocopy from the Encyclopedia L'Chachmei Teiman, p. 186). It is more conceivable that the manuscript was written in c. 1652, and the second colophon is from 1681].
Letters and remnants of shtarot, including several items, which apparently originate from other places in Oriental countries: · A section of a shtar dated: "Tuesday, 8th of Iyar, 1629. · Part of a leaf from a calendar with calligraphic signatures of Rabbi "Shlomo son of A[Avraham?] Laniado" and Rabbi "Shimon Mizrachi".
47 items. Size and condition vary.
Provenance: The Sassoon family collection.

Manuscript, Menorat HaMaor, by Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav. Sana'a (Yemen), Kislev 1848.
Thick volume. Nice-looking Yemenite writing, on European paper brought to Yemen. Two columns per page, with titles and initials decorated in red ink. At the beginning of each "Ner" (name of chapter in the book Menorat HaMaor) is a red and black ornamentation [with the exception of the sixth and seventh Ner].
Title page illustrated with a frame (in two colors): "The book Menorat HaMaor was written by Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav the Sephardi…written here in Sana'a…1848".
At the end of the book is a colophon by the writer.
Menorat HaMaor was embraced by Yemenite Jews and their communities adopted the custom of reading this composition in their synagogues every Shabbat afternoon. For this purpose, the book was divided into chapters for Shabbat and festival days throughout the year. In 1857, Rabbi Moshe Chanoch HaLevi, a Jew from Aden who reached Italy, printed an edition of Menorat HaMaor in Livorno for his Yemenite brethren. From that time, the Livorno edition became the basis for the manuscripts copied in Yemen. This is a complete manuscript of the composition (with the exception of a number of index leaves missing at the end), written before this well-known printing.
[227] leaves. Complete composition. Missing several index leaves at the end. Good condition. Stains. Tear to one leaf. Leather binding [partially restored], with (damaged) leather laces for fastening.
