Walks in Palestine, by Henry A. Harper. London: The Religious Tract Society, 1888. English.
The book is divided into 24 chapters which deal with impressions from different sites in Palestine, such as orange groves in Jaffa, Jaffa Gate, Western Wall, Via Dolorosa, Rachel's Tomb, road to Jericho and more. Each chapter is accompanied by a photo-gravure after a photograph by the photographer Cecil V. Shadbolt.
Henry Andrew Harper (1835-1900) was a painter well known for his paintings of the orient. He was a member of the Palestine Exploration Fund and wrote a number of books about journeys in Palestine.
This is a copy from a limited edition of the book, numbered 23/100 and bound in vellum binding of good quality, with gilt embossings. Gilt edges.
A handwritten dedication appears in the opening of the book, dated 1888: "To my dear… Mary (20th year)" [Mary B. Budgett, whose bookplate appears in the book]; the signature at the end of the dedication is not clear but it may be assumed that it was written by the author, the publisher or one of their acquaintances.
128 pp + [24] photo-gravure plates, 32.5 cm. Good condition. Significant foxing. One tissue guard is detached. Some small tears at margins of leaves. One loose gathering. Some defects and stains at margins of binding. Bookplate on inside of front binding.
