Six Postcards – "Jiskor"

Opening: $300
Unsold
Six postcards of the "Jiskor" series, with portraits of prominent figures, murdered in Eretz Israel at the end of the Ottoman period. Berlin, [ca.1918].
Postcards displaying portraits of prominent figures. Among them: Meir Hazanovitch, HaShomer organization member who was murdered in 1913 in Merhavia; Avraham Yossef Berl, a guard in Sejera who was murdered in 1910; Yossef Zaltsman, of the Second Aliya, who was murdered in 1913; and others. A text in German appears next to each portrait.
The portraits, illustrated by the Painter Mitchell Loeb, were taken out of "Yizkor", essays in memory of Jewish Yishuv victims – workers and guards who were murdered on duty. The book was first published in Yiddish in 1916, edited by Ya'akov Zrubavel, Yitzchak Ben-Zvi and Alexander Heshin. In 1918 the German edition of the book was published, translated by Gershom Scholem.
