Two printed letters. Sent to Bertha Hermann. Vienna, 1902, [1904].
1. Letter of gratitude by Theodor Herzl in response to a condolences letter sent to him when his father passed away.
2. Invitation from the Zionistische Aktions-Komitee to a concert in memory of Theodor Herzl which was held a week after Herzl’s demise.
The addressee, Bertha Hermann, was a member of “Moria” Jewish Women Union in Vienna. The letters are within the original envelopes (no stamps). 8 cm, good condition.

Photo of Herzl and his friends, members of his delegation, in the ruins of a temple in Athens (probably Acropolis). The photo was taken between the 21st and 23rd of October 1898.
Sitting next to the columns: (From right to left): David Wolfson, Moshe Shnierer, Herzl and Max Bodenheimer. In the autumn of 1898 Theodor Herzl left for Jerusalem with four companions. The journey went through Greece and was documented by a "Kodak" camera which David Wolfson purchased before the journey. The members of the delegations arrived in Athens and Crete between 21-23.10.1898. Herzl mentioned it in his diary: "…We go by islands rich with Greek stories… and then to Athens…". (From: "With Herzl to Jerusalem, editor: Yoram Mayorek, Carta publishing, Jerusalem, 1998, p.16).

The first American edition of “Der Judenstaat” [“The Jewish State”], Herzl’s revolutionary manifesto of Zionism, in which he outlined his vision of a Jewish State in Eretz Israel as a solution to anti-Semitism. First published in 1896 in Germany, “The Jewish State” is considered the most important Zionist publication ever. “It was Herzl’s book which really crystallized the idea of a national home for the Jews […] By his work he transformed the Jewish people from a passive community into a positive political force. That a Jewish State was created within 50 years of his death was due to the vision and the practical methods of Herzl, expressed in his manifesto of 1896.” (Printing and the Mind of Man).

Play in four acts, translated from German to Hebrew by Reuven Breinin. Warsaw: "Achiasaf", 1898. 1st Hebrew edition. Fine binding by "Biblioteka Achiasaf".
First published in German in Die Welt. Location: Vienna, 1893. The play was written following the Dreyfus trial which Herzl surveyed as a journalist. The play focuses on an assimilated Jewish lawyer who tries to break through the social ghetto enforced on Western Jews, but he fails. The lawyer's death at the end of the play serves as a warning that the situation of Western Jews is unbearable.
