Passover Haggadah, "with a beautiful commentary and fine illustrations of the signs and wonders G-d did for our ancestors", with the commentary of R. Yitzchak Abarbanel and a map of Eretz Israel. Amsterdam: Asher Anshel son of Eliezer Chazan and Yissachar Ber son of Avraham Eliezer, 1695. Two title pages, the first one illustrated with copper engravings.
This Haggadah, illustrated by the artist Avraham HaGer (a German priest from Rhineland who converted to Judaism in Amsterdam), was the first Haggadah to be illustrated with copper engravings, and one of the first Hebrew books to be illustrated with this printing method, which, as the second title page asserts, is infinitely superior to previously used woodcuts. This edition served as a prototype for many subsequent Haggadot, either by inclusion of the map or by imitation of its illustrations (see article by Cecil Roth, HaHaggadah HaMetzuyeret ShebiDefus, Areshet, III, 1961, pp. 22-25).
Original leather binding, ornamented on both sides with a cartouche and crown, with the caption "Haggadah Shel Pesach" in its center (these bindings were originally made made for the Amsterdam Haggadot).
On title page, signatures, deleted with ink: "Gumpel son of R. Yaakov Buch", "Yaakov son of Gumpel Buch".
On front endpaper, additional signatures, also deleted: "I, Gumpel son of R. Yaakov Buch, purchased this Haggadah from… R. Wolf Friedburg… Rosh Chodesh Nisan 1708", "I, Yaakov son of Gumpel Buch", "…son of Yaakov Buch". Additional signatures of Gumpel son of R. Yaakov Buch on leaf 2 and extending over leaves 3 and 20.
R. Mordechai HaLevi Horowitz's Avnei Zikaron – HaKetav VehaMichtav, Frankfurt 1901, documenting gravestones in Frankfurt am Main, records gravestones of R. Gumpel son of R. Yaakov Buch from 1731 (p. 213), his wife Shunle from 1731 (p. 215), his daughter Edel from 1741 (p. 252) and his son R. Yaakov from 1756 (p. 307).
