Mishpat HaMelech / Jus regium Hebraeorum e tenebris rabbinicis erutum & luci donatum, by Wilhelm Schickard. Leipzig: Friderici Lanckischi [Friedrich Lanckisch], 1674. Latin and Hebrew.
A political-theological work by Hebraist and astronomer Wilhelm Schickard (1592-1635), the inventor of the first calculating machine.

The work is illustrated with several small in-text illustrations, including a map of Palestine (engraving; with Hebrew text). Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author.
Wilhelm Schickard was among the first to translate passages from Rabbinic literature to Latin; his work had an influence on contemporary Protestant scholars, many of whom could not read Hebrew.
[7] ff., 482, 50 pp. + [1] engraving, 19 cm. Good condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Marking in ink on front endpaper. Leather-covered binding, slightly worn. Sticker on the front board. Small tears to spine.

Glossarium ad Scriptores Mediae et Infimae Latinitatis. Frankfurt am Main: Zunneriana, 1710. Latin. Three volumes.
Glossary of terms, shedding light on developments in Latin vocabulary in the Middle Ages, and the influences absorbed from "barbaric" languages; second, expanded edition of the influential work by the renowned French philologist and historian Charles du Fresne, sieur Du Cange (1610-1688). The significance of this work, derived from a wide variety of sources, lies in the historical distinction it draws between Classical Latin and later versions of the language that reflect modifications that appear under the Byzantine Empire and subsequently in the medieval period. The research conducted for this composition earned Du Cange a reputation as a founding father in the field of historical linguistics.
The book features 18 engravings – the frontispiece and 17 others – including 11 presenting Christian coins, kings, and saints of the Byzantine Empire (placed at the end of the first volume; these originally appeared alongside a brief discussion of Byzantine coins at the end of the third volume), and six engravings featuring medallions and monograms of European kings (in the second volume).
Three volumes. Vol. 1: [7] ff., 88 pp., 91-186 columns (columns 89-90 are skipped in the numbering); 1462 columns + [1] engraved frontispiece + XI engraved plates. Vol. 2: [1] f., 870 columns + [1] pl. (unnumbered engraving following column 718); [1] f., 926 columns (i.e 922; columns 641-46 are skipped in the numbering). Part I bound after Part II. Vol. 3: [1] f., 1736 columns, [2] ff., 91 pp. 35.5 cm. Stains, mostly minor; and minor wear. Creases and tears to edges of several leaves, with no damage to text. Worming to first leaves of Vol. 3. Bookplates on inside front bindings. Leather-covered bindings, with abrasion and wear, and with minor tears to edges of spines.

De Legibus Hebraeorum, Ritualibus et earum Rationibus, by John Spencer. Hague: Arnoldum Leers, 1686. Latin. Three parts in one volume (including a general title page and separate title pages for each section).
A pioneering work by English theologian and Hebraist John Spencer (1630-1693), which laid the foundations of the science of comparative religion. In his work, Spencer introduced the idea that Judaism is not the earliest religion, and argued that many Jewish laws and customs originated in those of other Semitic peoples. Spencer relied on works by classic Greek and Roman writers, but also on the Bible, sayings of Jewish sages, Maimonides and other Jewish sources, to indicate the similarity between Jewish laws (Sabbath, circumcision, ritual immersion, and more) and ritual customs of ancient Semitic peoples. He claimed that Judaism was mostly influenced by ancient Egyptian rituals, from which it drew many of its laws and customs.
[36], 476, [28] pp; [4], 504, [20] pp. approx. 22 cm. Good condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Notations and inked stamps on title page and several other leaves, Creases and tears to endpapers. Vellum-covered card binding, worn and stained (dark stains on front board; vellum is partly detached from card boards). Late notation on bottom of spine.

Las Costumbres de los Israelitas [Customs of the Jews], by Claude Fleury. Barcelona: Thomas Piferrer, 1769. Spanish.
This work, by well-known French historian Claude Fleury, deals with the customs and pursuits of the Israelites from the biblical period up to the author's times. The work was first published in Paris in 1681 (in French) and during the 18th century had many more editions in various languages. This is the Spanish edition translated by Manuel Martínez Pingarrón.
Claude Fleury (1640-1723), a French priest, historian, educator and jurist, was known mainly for his monumental work on the history of the Church, "Histoire Ecclésiastique", published in twenty volumes (Paris, 1691-1720).
Dedicatory inscription on front endpaper (1937): "A Jew from Florence to his sister from our country, Ziona. Av 1937" (Hebrew).
