Model of the Tabernacle by Maud A. Duthoit. London: Rudd & Co., [ca. 1903]. English.
Large assembly kit of a model of the Tabernacle, placed in a cardboard box. The kit includes the actual structure of the Tabernacle, made of golden cardboard, a roll of oil-painted fabric serving as the ground of the Tabernacle courtyard, sheets of colored paper representing the Tabernacle curtains, wire hooks symbolizing the ropes anchoring the courtyard hangings, a cardboard fence surrounding the Tabernacle, with debossed pillars, miniature metal and paper models of the Candelabra, Ark of the Covenant, Altar of Incense, Altar of Burnt-Offerings, Table of Showbread, Laver and High Priest wearing his vestments. The kit is accompanied by a booklet describing the structure of the Tabernacle and its utensils, "Handbook to accompany the Model of the Tabernacle", concluding with a folding plate of diagrams illustrating the supposed method of setting up the Tabernacle. The box containing the kit bears a label with an illustration of the Tabernacle and its furniture, in color.
Palestine, its history and antiquities, was a source of wonder to 19th century Victorian England. As the cradle of the Bible and Christianity, as well as a political crossroad of interests, Palestine drew religious and scientific interest, thus also attracting tourism. For those who could not visit the Holy Land, a privilege enjoyed by the wealthy class only, the Holy Land came to the British Isles; at first through drawings, maps, prints and even photographs, and later with models and panoramas exhibited in the large cities. In the middle of the century, smaller models, for display in private homes, became popular. Some represented contemporary Jerusalem, while others attempted to portray the city as it appeared in the time of the Temple. This model, produced as an educational tool for imparting Biblical knowledge, well reflects the spirit of the times.
Box: 53X14.5 cm. Base: 86X50.5 cm. Booklet: 16 pages, [1] plate. 18 cm. Overall fair-good condition. Damage to assembly parts. Box in poor condition, worn and stained. Many tears to box.

Seven glass slides of photographs depicting models of the Tabernacle, the Temple and the Temple Mount, created by Conrad Schick [photographers of the American Colony, Jerusalem, late 19th century to early 20th century] / a booklet titled "The Story of the Tabernacle and the Temples of Jerusalem as Illustrated by the Famous Dr. Schick Models" Jerusalem-New York: Vester & Company, The American Colony Stores, [1920s].
The slides depict models of the Tabernacle, the Temples, and the Temple Mount, during various periods: • the Tabernacle in the desert. • Solomon's Temple. • Zerubbabel's Temple (the Temple erected following the Return to Zion – the initial structure of the Second Temple). • Herod's Temple. • The Temple Mount during the period of Hadrian. • The Temple Mount during the period of Justinian. • The Temple Mount as it looked in Schik's time.
The booklet introduces the photographs, alongside detailed explanations on the various models and their historical context.
Schck's first model, built in Jerusalem in 1862, was a model of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The model was commissioned by the Ottoman authorities, with the purpose of serving as a detailed three-dimensional map that will help determine the ownership division of the Holy Sepulchre – a long-standing dispute between the different Christian denominations who share ownership over the property. In 1872, the Ottoman authorities commissioned Schick to produce models of the Temple Mount and the Dome of the Rock, to be displayed during the Vienna World Exhibition of 1873. From then on, Schick became occupied with building detailed models of Jerusalem, the Temple Mount, and the Temples erected on it throughout history. Schick's models had movable parts, allowing one to readjust them and thus visualize the history of the site.
Slides: 8X10 cm. Good condition. Slides captioned in handwriting on paper notes.
Booklet: 31 pp. 23 cm. Good condition. Stains on cover.
Reference: Nikolaos Magouliotis, Miniaturizing monuments: Conrad Schick and his architectural models of the holy sites of Jerusalem. Architecture beyond Europe, 18 | 2021: Entanglements of Architecture and Comfort beyond the Temperate Zone.
