Comprehensive study of Palestine and its history according to the Bible and the New Testament, by the English churchman and historian Thomas Fuller (1608-1661).
Accompanied by engravings (most of them on double plates): a title page engraving and an engraving depicting nobility emblems; a large, folded map of Palestine; a map of Jerusalem and maps of the territories of the 12 Tribes; and plates of plans and illustrations depicting the Temple, various pagan rituals mentioned in the Bible, and more.
Originally, the book contained 30 engravings. This copy contains 28 complete engravings and two incomplete ones (the two were originally printed on double plates. Half of each of them is missing).

Tears and worming, affecting the text and the engravings. Several of the engravings are reinforced with tape. Worming and open tears to the folded map of Palestine (one of them the size of approx. 3X16 cm); the map is mounted to thick paper for reinforcement. One plate is detached and one plate is loose. Ink notations (old) on several leaves and on the inside of the binding. Leather-covered binding, damaged and scuffed, with tears along the spine. Part of the spine is missing.

A description of a journey made by the English cleric Henry Maundrell from Aleppo (Syria) to Jerusalem. Accompanied by nine engraved-plates (five of them folded) – plans and illustrations of views and sites in Syria, Palestine and Lebanon (a view of Aleppo, Solomon's Pools, Mount Carmel, Mount Tabor, the Temple of Baalbek and more). An additional engraving on the title page.
In 1697, Henry Maundrell (1665-1701), chaplain to the "Levant Company" in Aleppo, and fourteen companions, went on a three-months Easter pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They travelled from Aleppo, passed through the Syrian and Lebanese coastline to Acre and from there, via the Jezreel valley and Samaria to Jerusalem. The book documenting the journey was published after Maundrell's death and is considered a reliable documentation of Palestine. The lithographs depict structures, ruins, churches, mosques, towns, landscapes and sites holy to the different religions throughout Palestine, Syria and Lebanon, the Transjordan and Egypt. Lithographic title page precedes each part.
At the beginning of the first volume is an impressive handwritten and illuminated dedication, to Mr. Thomas Smith: "Presented… by the male teachers of Sion Sunday School, as a token of esteem, for the very courteous and faithful manner in which… he has discharged his duties thereof" (Halifax, 1860).
