Travels, or observations relating to several parts of Barbary and the Levant by Thomas Shaw. "Printed at the Theatre", Oxford, 1738. First edition. English.
A research book about Algiers, Tunisia, Syria, Egypt and Palestine, by the English traveler and cleric Thomas Shaw. Shaw worked in Algiers between 1720 and 1733 and during that time he visited various towns in Africa and the Middle East. This book contains much information about the geography, geology and antiquities in the towns which he visited and is known mainly for its botanical and zoological plates.
The book contains 33 engravings – portrait of the author and 32 additional engravings (printed on 29 plates) with maps (some folding maps), illustrations of plants, animals, and more.
The chapter about Palestine is accompanied by a plan of Jerusalem (folding), a large map (folding) of the Middle East, illustration of Mount Sinai, and more.
On page 357 appears a schematic map of Palestine (names of locations are printed in Hebrew and English) after the map by R. Elia Mizrachi.

A portrait photograph pasted on a cardboard card with the details of the photographer printed on the verso: "M. Alex. Rosenthal… a Jerusaleme".
Apparently, Alexander Rosenthal was the son of a Jerusalemite Jew who converted to Christianity. He studied in England and upon his return to Jerusalem, opened a photography studio with M. Martinowicz. Very few photographs by Rosenthal and Martinowicz are known.

Card: 6.5X10.5 cm. Good condition. Light stains.

A stamp with an illustration of the Technion building and postal stamps (from 1956) also appear on the back. On the bottom appears a (handwritten) address for sending the photograph.
