Eÿgentliche Delineatio und Beschreibung der Kinder Israel Auszug aus Egÿpten…, map of Palestine, by the Dutch cartographer family Visscher. Hand-colored engraving from the Bible in its German translation by Luther (Biblia… Durch Martin Luther). [Wittenberg, 1670].
Engraving by Johann Friedrich Fleischberger, after Georg Andreas Böckler (signed in the plate in the margin).
The map is west-oriented, depicting Palestine on both sides of the Jordan River, with the territories of the Tribes. The shoreline stretches from Tripoli in the north the Nile Delta. Broken lines outline the route of the Israelites from Egypt to Canaan, via the Red Sea and Sinai Desert. Shown along the shoreline, from Sidon to Jaffa, are ships hauling rafts of Lebanon cedar that were sent by Hiram King of Tyre to King Solomon to build the Temple. An additional illustration depicts the story of Jonah the prophet.
Two medallions, in the upper corners, depict the figures of Moses with the Tablets of the Law and Aaron in priestly garb. Five inset illustrations of the Temple vessels at bottom and an inset depicting the location of the Tribes around the Tabernacle in the desert at right margin.
Engraved map: approx. 40X26 cm. Matted and framed: 60X45.5 cm. Good condition. Minor stains. Minor blemishes and small tears to edges.
