Ring "to light Shabbat candle". East Europe, 19th century.
Gold, carnelian stone.
This gold ring was worn by the lady of the house during candle lighting on Friday evening and maybe even during the whole day of Shabbat. The wearing of the ring illustrates for her and for her family the transition from "Secular to Holy". An oval carnelian is set, with an inscription engraved in gilded letters: ”LeHadlik ner shel Shabbat” [to Light a Shabbat candle]". A three-branched Shabbat Menorah, in East-European style, is engraved in the center of the stone with two starts on the sides.
Max. length of stone: 3 cm.
