Furtreffliches Denck-Mahl der Gottlichen Regierung, bewiesen an der uhralten hochst-beruhmten Antiquitat des Klosters S. Michaelis in Luneburg..., von M. Sigismund Hossman. No publisher indicated, Celle, 1711. Fourth edition. German.
Helmstadt: Hoffmann, 1711. German.
Two books written by Sigismund Hosmann, the priest of Celle, Germany. In his priestly function Hosmann accompanied the band of robbers headed by Nickel (or Nikol) List, many of whose members were Jewish. The band members were imprisoned and executed in Celle. The two books evince an anti-Semitic tone.
The first book includes 18 plates, most of them portraits of the band members. Three portraits contain explicit mention that the portrayed men are Jews.
The first work describes the entire band - their capture, trial and execution. The second work discusses the difficulty of converting Jews, with the case of band member Jonas Meyer serving as an example. According to the book, when Meyer was about to be executed before a large public he cried out loud, “I lived as a Jew and I shall die as a Jew. Cursed is he in whose heart is an iota of belief in Jesus”. This book contains an entire chapter, 40 pages long, devoted to Sabbatai Zevi.
In 1698, List’s band robbed the church of Lüneburg, Germany, with the gold treasure they took from it making this the greatest church robbery ever undertaken. The following year, the band, many of whose members were Jewish, was captured, and its members were sentenced to death.
