Sefer HaEmunot, on beliefs and opposition to philosophy, by R. Shem Tov ibn Shem Tov. Ferrara: Abraham ibn Usque, 1556. Printed with: Hasagot, by R. Moshe Alashkar – objections to the arguments of R. Shem Tov against the Rambam in Sefer HaEmunot. Ferrara: Abraham ibn Usque, [1556]. Only edition of Sefer HaEmunot.
Divisional title page for Hasagot.
Sefer HaEmunot is a polemic work against philosophy and in support of Kabbalah. The author, R. Shem Tov ibn Shem Tov, a Torah scholar in pre-expulsion Spain, directs most of his strongly-worded criticism at the Rambam. A transcript of this work reached R. Moshe Alashkar, who vehemently rose to the Rambam's defense in his Hasagot, with sharp criticism of R. Shem Tov ibn Shem Tov. When publishing the present edition of Sefer HaEmunot, the publisher felt it his duty to print together with it the objections of R. Moshe Alashkar (first published in his responsa work, Sabbioneta 1554). Sefer HaEmunot was never reprinted.
Gloss (trimmed) in Ashkenazic script on p. 6b. Stamps.
116; 16 leaves. 19 cm. Most leaves in good condition. Stains. Tears to title page and three following leaves, affecting title page border (with some loss), repaired. Minor worming. Old binding, with damage.

Shaarei Dura, halachic rulings on the laws of Kashrut, by R. Yitzchak HaLevi of Dura (Düren), with the Mevo She'arim commentary, by R. Natan Shapiro (Maharnash). Lublin: Kalonymus son of Mordechai Jaffe, [1574]. First edition of the Mevo She'arim commentary.
Historiated title page.
Signatures and inscriptions in early Ashkenazic script, by "Avraham son of R. Refael", attesting that he acquired the book in Frankfurt in 1590.
Lengthy glosses in early Ashkenazic script on pp. 26b and 107b.
Shaarei Dura, composed in the 13th century, is one of the most important works on the laws of Kashrut, and is quoted extensively by both the Beit Yosef and the Rama. Until the printing of the Shulchan Aruch, Shaarei Dura was the primary Ashkenazic work on the laws of Kashrut.
This is the fifth edition of this work (first printed in Krakow, 1534). Since each edition of Shaarei Dura was printed based on a different manuscript, all the editions published in the 16th century are in effect first editions. This is also the first edition of Mevo She'arim by R. Natan Shapiro.
109 leaves. Final leaf – leaf 110 is probably a photocopy on old paper. 28.5 cm. Good condition. Stains (including ink stains) and wear. Tears and worming to title page, affecting border. Title page reinforced with paper on verso. Tears and worming to several leaves, affecting text. Inscriptions. New leather binding.
