Copy from a limited edition, numbered 97/100 and bound in a vellum binding of good quality, embossed in gold. Top edge gilt.
Henry Andrew Harper (1835-1900) was a British artist well known for his paintings of the Orient. He was a member of the Palestine Exploration Fund committee and wrote a number of books about journeys in Palestine.

In each of the four parts appear thirty-six photographs (each photograph is accompanied by a printed leaf with information about the photographed site), and a small photograph on each of the title pages.
Francis Frith (1822-1898) was one of the most important early photographers of Palestine. In 1856 he sailed to Alexandria, and for nearly two years he went on photography journeys in Egypt, Sinai and Palestine. Due to the local conditions, Frith had to carry the equipment from site to site on donkeys, and develop the negatives right after he has taken the photographs, in tents which served as darkrooms. His works are considered the first professional photographs of Palestine.
Total of 8 volumes, 148 photographs. Photographs: approx. 22.5X16 cm. Volumes: 43 cm. Fair-poor condition. Significant worming (the volumes were fumigated). Stains, creases and blemishes. A few tears. Original, gilt embossed bindings, with leather spines. Gilt edges. Bindings are damaged and worn, with worming. Some of the bindings are detached or partly detached. Bookplates on inside front bindings.

Impressions from a tour in Palestine, accompanied by 12 photographs by photographer Francis Bedford, including photographs of Jerusalem (Gethsemane, view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, Tomb of Absalom and the Dome of the Rock), Jaffa, Hebron and other towns.
The English photographer Francis Bedford (1816-1894) started photographing during the 1850s. In 1862 he was appointed by Queen Victoria to photograph Palestine and the vicinity while touring the area with Prince of Wales Eduard VII. The photographs in this book were taken during that tour.
On the front endpaper appears a dedication (in English) from 1865.
VIII, 88 pp + [12] photograph-plates, 20.5 cm (photographs approx. 10X7.5 cm). Gilt edges. Good condition. Some stains to leaves. Slight creases and tears at margins of a number of leaves. Minor blemishes to binding. Cloth strips pasted on top and bottom of spine.

The collection contains numerous photographs of Jerusalem and its different sites: The Temple Mount, the Mount of Olives, a panorama of Jerusalem, the Mary Magdalene Church on the Mount of Olives, the Church of Saint Anne, Jaffa Gate, the Sebil on El-Wad road, Jews in Jerusalem and more; the Mar Saba Monastery, Jaffa seen from the sea, Ramla, Druze on Mount Carmel and more.
All the photographs (except two) are signed in the plate and most are titled in the plate in French. All the photographs except one are mounted on cardboard boards in varying sizes; on some boards, photographs are mounted on both sides.
One of the photographs, a studio photograph of a woman, was taken by Hippolyte Arnoux (a photographer who worked in Egypt). The photograph is signed in the plate and titled "Jewish woman" on the board.
