Reverse: "May the [evil eye?] have no power over [this] child". The name "Shadai" appears in the center surrounded by a schematic decoration. A suspension loop on top.

Ink on Gevil (soft texture, brown-hue), Sephardic scribal writing. Rolled on the original atzei chaim. 48 lines per column.
The scroll is rolled on a pair of wooden atzei chaim, carved with a geometric pattern and decorated in green and red. Silver rings, also decorated with geometric patterns are attached to the top of the atzei chaim. At the bottom of one of the atzei chaim is an ownership inscription in ink: "This is the scroll of R. Yitzchak Gabai".
Height of membranes: approx. 53 cm. Maximum height including the atzei chaim: approx. 96 cm. Fair condition. Dark stains. Tears to membrane. Tears affecting text in several places. Late corrections to text. Two late replaced membranes (20th century?).
Enclosed is a report by an expert on ancient Torah scrolls regarding the place and date of writing.

Torah scroll. [Tunis, 18th/19th century]. Placed in a case, with a pair of finials and a pointer. [Iraq or Iran, first decades of the 20th century].
Velvet-covered wood; silver and sheet silver, repoussé, cast, engraved and soldered; paper; parchment; ink.
The Torah scroll is written on parchment, in a script characteristic of Tunis, 19th century (see enclosed expert's report).
The case is lined with crimson velvet and adorned with three belts of sheet silver attached with rivets. The middle belt has a repoussé of floral ornamentation and the two flanking belts bear inscriptions of dedication: "This case and its Torah scroll were made by the woman Vatzha daughter of Shimon Avraham Nissim [… 1936?]", "It is written that wherever the owners of the Torah scroll wish to take and place it, they are allowed to do so". Attached along the top edges of the case is a silver "wall" made like roses. The top of the case is crowned with a silver-plated finial with bells. Paper sheets are pasted on the inside of the case, with a dedication almost identical to the dedication inscribed on the belts (one is placed behind a pane, another bearing the name of the donor is mostly lacking), surrounded with colored paper strips. The inside of the case is lined with a (late) floral-patterned green synthetic fabric. A small silver hook which locks the case is attached on the outside.
A pair of finials adorned with chains with dangling bells sit atop the case, with engraved dedications: "Eliyahu Mizrahi, died 15th Tevet 1914", "For the soul of Sedera daughter of Zaki Natan".
A simple silver unadorned pointer is enclosed with the Torah scroll.
Height of the parchment membranes of the Torah scroll: 48 cm. Fair condition. Stains and wear. Damage, tears and holes in a number of places.
Height of case: 100 cm, diameter: 28 cm. Overall good-fair condition. Dents, breaks and lacking breaks to silver ornamentation. Unravelling, open tears and damage to velvet lining. The inner fabric lining is unprofessionally glued to the case and its edges are cut and unfinished. The left paper sheet is damaged and mostly lacking. The colored paper strips are damaged and lacking. A (new) small metal plate is nailed onto the top of the case.
Height of finials: approx. 21 cm. Good-fair condition. Corrosion. Dents. Breaks. Soldering repairs. Lacking and torn chains and lacking bells.

Torah scroll, Sephardic scribal writing, placed in a Tunisian-style wooden case wrapped in drapery. [Israel, ca. 1960s].
Ink on processed parchment. Writing characteristic of Oriental Jewry in Israel in the 60s.
The scroll is placed in a 13-sided wooden case draped in fabric in Tunisian style, topped with a sawn crown. Attached to the case are dedication plates shaped like the Two Tablets, with the names of: "R. Faraji Alush and his son Susu Alush and his wife Felila", and the inscription: "Donation of the girls Kadara and Zahiya Alush for the life of the family of the holy rabbi…". Hooks are attached all around the case for hanging the crimson velvet drapery, machine-embroidered with silver threads, decorated with a braided ribbon and straps. A Torah crown and Tablets of Law are embroidered in the center, flanked by verses, Stars of David surrounded by flowers, lamps and dedications: "Kadara daughter of Felila Alush, Zahiya daughter of Felila Damara and Simcha daughter of Tita Bochovze", "Felya daughter of Aziza, Aziza daughter of Esther, and Oreda daughter of Rivka, R. Parazi son of Oreda and Pinchas son of Mas'uda Alush".
R. Faraji Alush (1854-1921), Rabbi of Gabès (Tunisia), was a revered sage in Tunis. Author of Responsa Ohev Mishpat. In the 1970s, his remains were brought to Israel and interred in the Be'er Sheva cemetery, alongside the grave of his disciple R. Chaim Chori.
Height of parchment: approx. 50 cm. Light-colored white parchment. Good condition.
Height of case: 74 cm. Diameter: approx. 34.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Breaks. Open break on one side of the crown.
Drapery: 57 x 113 cm. Good condition. Unraveling fabric and stitches and torn loops.

Early Esther scroll. [Bohemia, ca. late 16th century or early 17th century].
Early script characteristic of late 16th or early 17th century Bohemia. 14 lines per column. The first membrane is lacking and was replaced by a later membrane written in typical 18th century German script (the number of lines is not uniform and it is apparent that it was written as a replacement).
Originally, the scroll's layout varied from the tradition accepted in recent centuries, with lacking and additional parshiot; however, these were revised at the time the first membrane was replaced, in an similar script (see the enclosed expert's report).
Height of parchment: 17.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains, creases and wear.
Early script characteristic of late 16th or early 17th century Bohemia. 14 lines per column. The first membrane is lacking and was replaced by a later membrane written in typical 18th century German script (the number of lines is not uniform and it is apparent that it was written as a replacement).

Initials of the name of the scribe or of the owner who ordered the scroll head the columns. The words "Mordechai the son" are stressed in the verse "In Shushan the citadel there was a Jew whose name was Mordecai the son of Yair…", and each column thereafter opens with a stressed letter. The initials compose the name "Mordechai son of Moshe Frances" and the Hebrew letters "Heh, Aleph and Yud" (May G-d guard him?). All these letters are enlarged and stressed with an illustration of a finger pointing to the letter (manicule).
