Six notebooks, written and illustrated by hand; the work of a pupil or a number of pupils at a school in Palestine ("Beit Chinuch" in Rehovot?). Presented as a gift to an imprisoned "Haganah" member at the time of his release in May 1945. Hebrew.
The notebooks include descriptions of a trip throughout the country and information on various cities and sites. Incorporated throughout the text are fine illustrations in ink and watercolor - landscapes, decorations, maps and more.
1. Notebook with description of an annual school excursion to sites throughout the country. The text was written by one of the pupils and it describes the excursion's itinerary, the different sites they visited and the people they met along the way. The excursion begins with a ride from Rechovot to Atlit, continues to Wadi Fallah (Oren River) and Kibbutz Beit Oren, Keren HaCarmel, Daliat al-Carmel, Kibbutz Yagur, Haifa (including a meeting with the mayor), Ramat Yochanan, the "Na'aman" brick factory, Acre, Nahariya and Kibbutz Eilon. At the beginning of the notebook is a map of Palestine marked with the excursion's itinerary.
On the first page is a dedication: "To the Haganah prisoner / 'Nathan' / On the day of his release, with love / Class 5, 21 Iyar 5705".
2. Notebook with the same text as above (with some changes), with different illustrations and color captions.
3-6. Four notebooks containing historical and geographic depictions of different sites throughout the country - apparently, notes taken in classes and lectures. Among other things the notebooks contain texts about Samaria, the Menashe Region, the Carmel, Beit Oren, Beersheba and the Negev (with a full-page illustration depicting the "crowdedness of the settlements in the Negev and the Western Transjordan outside the Negev"), settlements in the Galilee, Tel Aviv and Jaffa, the Kabara swamps, Acre and other sites. The notebooks also include many texts about the sea (copied poems about the sea, texts on fishing and more. One leaf shows a map of fishing villages in Palestine in 1940).
Six notebooks, about 420 leaves, approx. 20.5X30.5 cm. Bound in new bindings (with new endpapers). Good overall condition. Stains.
