Entdecktes Judenthum, oder, Gründlicher und wahrhaffter Bericht, welchergestalt die verstockte Juden die Hochheilige Dreyeinigkeit, Gott Vater. erschrecklicher Weise lästern [Judaism Unmasked - a thorough and real report about the horrifying manner in which the stubborn Jews slander the Holy Trinity and disgrace it], by Johann Andreas Eisenmenger. [Frankfurt am Main], 1700. Two parts bound together. German.
Eisenmenger (1654-1704) - a German orientalist and professor of Semitic languages, considered one of the first bearers of anti-Semitism in the new era. This book was dubbed by writer and historian Shimon Dubnov the "Encyclopedia of the Hatred of Jews". Eisenmenger mastered the Bible, Talmud and rabbinical writings and met with Jewish sages and rabbis, seeking to retrieve references against the Christian faith. For 19 years he presented himself as a person meaning to approach Judaism and study its sources in order to eventually convert; in 1694 he even printed the Hebrew Bible in Frankfurt and was granted the approbation of Rabbi David Gruenhut, who mentioned him in the introduction as an "exalted scholar". The book Entdecktes Judenthum - "Judaism Unmasked" - is an extensive study, written in an apparently reliable scientific manner, against Judaism and its dangers to Christianity, and is considered to this day a classic of modern anti-Semitism.
[17], 998, 1108 pp, 20.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and creases. Tears to margins of title page and following leaf. Original vellum binding, with stains.

A single incunabula leaf from Hartmann Schedel’s book "Weltchronik" (Nuremberg Chronicle). Nuremberg, 1493. German.
Bearing a large woodcut illustration of the supposed ritual murder of the child Simon of Trent by Jews (whose names appear in the illustration). Partly colored, frame emphasized in orange.
On March 23, 1475, a two-and-a-half-year-old Christian child by the name of Simon disappeared from his parents’ home in Trent in northern Italy; three days later, on the eve of Good Friday (a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ), his body was found near the home (or in the cellar or well) of a Jew who was a resident of the city, a moneylender by the name of Samuel. After the body was found, the Bishop announced that all of Trent’s Jewish community, including a number of converted Jews, is guilty of the child’s murder. All of the city’s Jews were arrested, tortured, and some were executed, by fire or beheading. Simon was declared a saint by the Pope, and his memory was commemorated annually in the month of March, until his status as a saint was cancelled in 1965.
The verso is illustrated with three additional woodcuts: a comet; Christian, King of Denmark, Sweden and Norway; and Hercules, Duke of Ferrara.
Sheet approx. 27.5X42.5 cm. Fair-poor condition. Stains, creases and open tears to margins (without damage to text). Tear to woodcut, about 4 cm long. Matted, with two strips of adhesive tape, on upper and lower margins. Additional paper strip (4 cm long) glued to upper left corner on reverse.
Provenance: Collection of Dr. Simon Cohen.

Issue no. 704 of the French newspaper L'Aurore, conspicuously headlined with the essay "Lettre à Madame Alfred Dreyfus" [Letter to Madam Alfred Dreyfus], by Émile Zola. Paris, September 22, 1899. French.
The essay, composed as an open letter from Zola to Alfred Dreyfus' wife, was written by Zola immediately upon his learning of Dreyfus' pardon. It was printed in L'Aurore three days later, the day after the pardon was officially made public.
The French writer and publicist Émile Zola (1840-1902) was a prominent supporter of Alfred Dreyfus. His famous essay "J'Accuse!" (considered by many the most famous newspaper article of all time) was also published in L'Aurore, in January 1898. In the present essay - which can be viewed as a summary of the Dreyfus Affair, an epilogue to the struggle for justice that opened with J’Accuse! - Zola refers to the conclusion of the Dreyfus Affair and expresses his delight at Dreyfus' pardon.
4 pp, 61.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains and creases. Tears to margins. Creases with tears, a few open, which have been professionally restored (with minor damage to the text).
