Photo album that documents the activities of the Borochov Youth Movement (Borochov Jugend) in Poland during the period 1945-1947, ie immediately after WWII. Lodz, December 1, 1947. Yiddish.
The Borochov Youth Movement – the young people's branch of the Po'aley Zion party – was a chalutz movement that operated in Poland immediately after the war. Their goal was to save and rehabilitate the thousands of Jewish children and youths who survived the horrors of the Holocaust and were left orphaned, hungry and destitute.
This album contains 15 large photographs (18x24cm), which are actually photographs of illustrated posters displayed at a presentation given to donors to the movement summing up the past two years of the movement's activities (1945-47). In a manner, this album is a "report in pictures" ("a baricht in bild", as written in the introduction) which presents details (primarily statistical) of the movement's varied activities, including kibbutzim for children and youth, production, cultural activities, conventions, seminars for members, book publishing, etc. At the end of the album are six small photographs taken at the convention.
Included is a booklet by Rafael Mahler, titled "'Yugend' – The Youth Movement of the Leftist Po'aley Zion in Poland" (1974), signed by the author.
Album 22.5x30cm. Overall very good condition. Chipping to the first photograph and scuffing to the album margins.

A Descriptive Geography and Brief Historical Sketch of Palestine, by Rabbi Joseph Schwarz. Translated by Isaac Leeser. Illustrated With Maps and Numerous Engravings. Published by A. Hart, Philadelphia, 1850. First English translation, first edition in the US.
English translation of Tevu'ot Ha'Aretz, by Rabbi Joseph Schwarz. Contains Schwarz's portrait (opposite title page), two maps of Eretz Israel (folded) and twelve lithograph print plates with illustrations of sites in Eretz Israel.
After his monumental comprehensive work on Eretz Israel had been published in Jerusalem, Rabbi Joseph traveled as emissary to NY in 1849 where his brother was living. Leeser, who understood the importance of the book and its translation into English, wrote in the translator's introduction that, "It is to be hoped that this book may contribute to extend the knowledge of Palestine, and rouse many to study the rich treasures which our ancient literature affords, and also to enkindle sympathy and kind acts for those of our brothers, who still cling to the soil of our ancestors, and love the dust in which the many saints of our race sleep in death awaiting a glorious resurrection and an Immortal life". In his introduction, Leeser further notes that the entire book was done by Jewish authors and artists, with the exception of the maps, which were printed by a non-Jew but under Leeser's close inspection.
