"The Jewish Chronicle" – national newspaper of British Jewry – was founded in London in 1841 and still continues to appear which makes it the oldest Jewish paper in the world.
Presented here are issues 1-23 bound in one volume, from November 12, 1841 through April 14 1842 (most probably issue no. 24 is included but without its first page). "Advertisement Sheet" is attached to issue no. 9.
An original title page was added to the volume. On the reverse appear words by the founders and editors of the paper, Rabbi David Meldola (Dayan and Rabbi of the London Portuguese Synagogue) and Moses (Moshe) Engel (considered one of the prominent figures in religious and secular Jewish education of British Jewry in the 19th cent.). They wrote and introduction to the first issue in which they describe the vision that led them to establish this newspaper. 138, [2] pp, 31.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains. Moisture-marks.
