Zola dans La Mé… Lasse..! – Articulated Card – Anti-Dreyfus Caricature
Opening: $200
Unsold
Articulated card featuring an anti-Dreyfus caricature. Paris: Leon Hayard, [1898?].
The card depicts a French soldier dunking something into a barrel labeled "vidange" ("sewage"). The soldier's arm is movable, and when raised it appears to be pulling the figure of author Émile Zola out of the barrel. The cartoon's caption reads "Zola dans La Mé… Lasse..! (literally, "Zola is mired in molasses," a French figure of speech that translates as "Zola is in trouble").
The caricature bears the printed signature "P. Dous Y'Nell."
This cartoon apparently refers to the libel suit filed against Zola in 1898, following publication of his famous article entitled "J'Accuse…!" Zola was consequently found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison. He then escaped to England, where he spent almost a year in hiding.
Approx. 12X17 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Minor creases. Two tears to edges, one partly restored.
