A book written one year following the death of the painter Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779), an Italian painter of Jewish-German origin, that served as the court painter in a number of places in Europe (amongst others, in Spain, in the court of Carlo III). Volume one of two volumes published by a friend of Mengs, the Spanish diplomat José Nicolás de Azara. The book contains Mengs's "Reflections on Beauty and Taste in Painting", his writing about the artists Raphael, Correggio and Tizian, and more.
[10], LXXIV, 251 pp, 31.5 cm. Good condition. Thick paper of good quality, wide margins. Trimming of leaves is irregular. Slight damages at margins of leaves. Creases and some stains. Signature in pen on title page. Non-original cloth covered binding, slightly stained.
