A bronze medal minted in honor of Franz Joseph I visit to the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem on November 9, 1869.
Franz Joseph visited Palestine while traveling the Middle East on the occasion of the Suez Canal opening.
Obverse: emperor's profile portrait surrounded by the legend: Franciscus Iosephus I D G Austriae Imperator et Hungariae Rex Apost [Franz Joseph by the Grace of God Emperor of Austria and Apostolic King of Hungary]. Artist's signature: J. Tautenhayn.
Reverse: A figure holding a cross and a kneeling angel on either side. The date: IX Nov MDCCCLXIX, surrounded by the legend: sacrum redemtoris sepulcrum post scruciatas expeditiones omnium imperatorum occidentalium primus invisit [loosely translates as: the first western king who visited the Holy Sepulcher].
