A modern Russian epic poem written in 1924, first published in 1927. The plot takes place during the civil war in Russia and its protagonist is a fictional anarchist leader named Ulyaliev (Улялаев). Upon its publication, the poem was a success among readers and critics, and quickly became a milestone in modern Russian poetry. However, shortly after its publication it was censored by the Stalinist regime, and later published in censored versions.

Ilya Selvinsky (Илья́ Льво́вич Сельви́нский, 1899-1968) was a prominent poet, playwright and writer in Soviet Russia. Born in Simferopol to a Jewish family, he began writing poetry in his youth and was recognized in the 1920s as part of the constructivist movement in literature. Served in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War. His most famous work, printed in the present volume, gave him an important status in Soviet literature. He created in diverse styles and faced criticism and censorship during most of the years of his work under Stalin's regime.

Alexander Tyshler (Александр Григорьевич Тышлер, 1898-1980) was a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and stage designer. Born to a Jewish family in Melitopol, Ukraine. Studied at the art school in Kiev and then at VKhUTEMAS in Moscow. In the 1920s he was associated with various avant-garde groups, including Kultur-Lige. Tyshler's unique style combined elements of cubism, surrealism and Jewish folk art. He is especially known for his theater designs.
