Two Silver Amulets – "May the Virtue of Jerusalem Protect You" – Palestine or Egypt, 1920
Opening: $300
Unsold
Two amuletic medallions created either on the occasion of the confirmation of the British Mandate for Palestine, or on the occasion of the appointment of Herbert Samuel as High Commissioner of Palestine. [Palestine or Egypt, 1920]. Silver (unmarked). Two amulets, identical except in size. Inscribed on one side (Hebrew): "May the virtue of Jerusalem protect you / [Hebrew year] 5680 / Year of Redemption." Star of David on top. On other side, the inscription "Shaddai" enclosed within a Star of David, encircled by vegetal pattern. These medallions were minted in 1920, following the conquest of Palestine by the British, either on the occasion of the confirmation of the British Mandate for Palestine, or on the occasion of the appointment of Herbert Samuel as High Commissioner of Palestine. The inscription "Year of Redemption" reflects the Zionistically-imbued spirit and hopes of imminent redemption that prevailed in many Jewish communities at the time, and the great joy felt by many over the conducive circumstances now newly created for the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine.
Diam: 25 mm; 28 mm. Good condition. Originally gilt; most of gilt coating worn off. Stains.
