Owner’s signatures on the title page: “The Holy Elazar Lazi from Berlin”. “I bought this from my late father property, Izik Berlin”.
The great Rabbi Elazar Lazi (1841-1914) was born in Berlin. He was among the greatest Torah scholars of his generation. Served as Dayan in the Rabbinical court of Rabbi Refael Ha-Cohen in Hamburg. Served as the Chief Rabbi of the Altona, Hamburg and Wandsbek communities since 1899. Authored the “Mishnat Rabbi Eliezer” and kept a correspondence with the “Chatam Sofer” (Ishim Be-Teshuvot Chatam Sofer, page 78). More about him in enclosed material.
His son, Rabbi Izik Berlin from Hamburg, was a great and rigorous Torah scholar.
