Torah scroll case (Sephardic). Egypt, [beginning of 20th century].
Wood, inlayed with wood, ivory and shell; cut and engraved silver plates.
Without torah scroll. The outside of the case is completely inlayed with tiny pieces of shell in shades of white and pink and bits of ivory in geometrical patterns and in the shape of Stars of David (inlaying work, characteristic of the Syrian region). Nailed at the center, where the case doors connect, a round silver plate with an engraved dedication: "Hashem remembered them for the good, by Mr. Eliyahu Wahaba and his wife Allegra Wahaba Alledya. This book and case belongs to them and they are entitled to move it to wherever they wish".
The inside is adorned with four transverse strips, with four verses from Psalms Chapter 19, all four made with delicate high-quality inlay of ivory, wood and shell. Two" atzei chaim "are inside.
Although the inlay adorning the case originated in Syria, probably the case originates from Egypt as insinuated by the last name of the couple Eliyahu and Allegra Wahaba.
Height: 56 cm. diameter: 32.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Missing adornments. Worn holes. Missing or broken bits of shell and ivory.
