Torah mantle. Hoenheim, France (Alsace), [1894].
Silk velvet, elevated gilded thread embroidery, sequins and glass stones.
This splendid Torah Mantle, was donated to the Hoenheim congregation in Alsace, France. The mantle is made of green silk and ornamented with gilded decorations. In the center – Ark of Testimoy with Tablets of the Law in Roman characters. Golden sun rays emerge from the ark. An applique in gilded thread of two hovering angels appears on the upper part of the mantle. The angels hold an elaborate Torah Crown embroidered in gilded thread and adorned with gem stones with the letter "K" "T" (Keter Torah). This decorative scheme is known from textile ritual objects of Alsace region. Embroidered on the lower part of the mantle: "Donation of Menachem Bar Yitzchak Shtrois and his spouse Sarla Hoenheim 1894". The mantle is trimmed with gilded fabric bands and fringes.
Height: 82 cm, width: 40 cm. Good condition, velvet is worn with minor tears and a spot. Contained in a sealed Perspex box.
