A commemorative sheet – celebration in memory of Rabbi Ephraim Elnekave. Tlemcen, Algiers, [ca. 1920].

Rabbi Ephraim Elnekave was considered a holy and saintly rabbi and many legends were told about him. The rabbi moved from Spain to Tlemcen following the 1391 riots. The print features scenes related to the legends told about the rabbi. The image of a lion on the upper part refers to a story told about the rabbi and his disciples, who camped alone in the desert while on journey to avoid consecration of Shabbat. While there, a lion tried to attack them but upon seeing the rabbi calmed down and laid himself at his feet. The depicted spring refers to a legend telling the story about the rabbi who was thirsty on his way to Tlemcen, and managed to get water by hitting a rock, from which water came out pouring.
Approx. 36X24.3 cm. Fair condition. Wear. Tears, creases, folding marks, stains. Parts of the plate are lacking. Framed. Unexamined out of frame.
