"Shema, Israel!". A proclamation calling to enlist to the British army during WW II, [late 1939 or early 1940s].
"Blood of our ancestors…and the blood of British fighting here today…call us: volunteer volunteer".
After World War II broke out and during the war, many Jewish settlers in Eretz Israel volunteered to the British army to fight Nazi Germany. At the end of 1939, the national institutes of the Yishuv announced a census which would reflect the readiness of the Yishuv to fight in the British army. 40,000 young people enlisted. At first, the British government was unwilling to recruit the Jews, but the German threat grew and British unwillingness dissipated. 30X15.5 cm. Poor condition. Tears, folding marks, stains, adhesive tape and a plastic label. Framed.
