"Safed" kiddush cup with wedding dedication. [Europe, 19th century; Eretz Israel, early 20th century - dedication from 1912].
Engraved silver (marked).
The cup was made in Europe in the 19th century, with decorations added in Eretz Israel in the early 20th century. Three medallions delicately engraved with decorations showing the Western Wall, the Cave of Machpelah and the Tombs of the Davidic Kings. Interspersed between the medallions are engraved decorations of leaves and flowers.
Near the rim of the cup is the engraved inscription "A. O. LW. Nov. 6. 1912. Safed. Galilee".
Unlike other "Safed" cups, on two of the medallions appearing here the place name was not engraved, but rather the two Hebrew blessings "He who Finds a Wife Finds a Good Thing" and "Mazal Tov", meant to indicate the date using gematria [the Hebrew letters of the blessing encipher the Jewish year 5673, corresponding to November 1912].
Height: 7 cm, rim diameter: 6.3 cm. Good condition. Some stains.
