A document of regulations of collecting Baja (Hungary) community taxes signed by the conciliator Rabbi Avraham, Rabbi of Breznitz. [C. 1600-s]. This important document was written by the Rabbi of Breznitz who was called upon to compromise between the community members who disputed and appealed the amounts of community taxes imposed on them. He writes in his ruling that the community foundations have been shaken because of these disputes and the delay by many to pay the amount imposed on them, "until the matter has come before me and the chiefs and heads of the community requested me many times and also sent various letters urging and beseeching me to get involved in the community affairs… and I have come to the Baja community and called a meeting of the heads and all members of the community… and each one offered his suggestion at length one versus another… and after all this lengthy discussion I understood all very well, each matter and its opposition and I have reviewed all aspects… to find a fair resolution… and one ruling for all where the wealthy give more and the poor less". Further on he writes that the former regulations should be annulled and a new rate for evaluation and tax collection should be set. "And the community heads and special individuals have agreed to my words with the endorsement of Rabbi Azriel Katz".. [Possibly, Rabbi Azriel Katz member of the Beit Din of the author of "Panim Me'irot" in Eisenstadt].
The document has no date, but apparently, by the topic and manner of writing, it was written in the 1600-s in the time of the "Va'ad Arba Aratzot", which was active and set regulations in the area of Poland and Lithuania whereas in the Hungary-Bohemia countries the regulations tended to be more local.
