The author, born to a Jewish family, converted to Christianity a few years before composing the essay. In the foreword he announces his intentions of convincing other Jews to follow his example and convert. In 1724 the work was revised by Sebastian Jacob Jugendres, who corrected and refined Kirchner's scornful tone. The corrected edition included etchings depicting Jewish customs.
