Rom und Jerusalem, die letzte Nationalitätsfrage, Briefe und Noten, von M. [Moses] Hess. [Rome and Jerusalem, the last National Question, Missives and Notes, by Moses Hess]. Leipzig: Eduard Wengler, 1862. German and some Hebrew. First edition.
In the book "Rome and Jerusalem", which was written as an epistolary narrative (a collection of twelve letters by Moses Hess to his friend), Hess expresses his desire to establish a state for the Jewish nation argued for the Jews to return to Palestine.
Moses (Moshe) Hess (1812-1875), author, philosopher and socialist, one of the founding fathers of the socialist movement in Europe, one of the first Zionists, and a founder of Zionist Socialism. Hess published essays, founded and edited periodicals with a socialistic agenda, and collaborated with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. After alienating himself for many years from Judaism he went through a radical transformation in view of the 1848 revolutions and the movements to unite Germany and Italy which made it clear to him that the national aspect is central in modern existence. In 1861 he completed his book "Rome and Jerusalem". At first he could not find a publisher but in 1862 he managed to publish the book in Leipzig. ?Hess died in Paris in 1875 and was buried, according to his request, in the Jewish cemetery of Cologne. In 1961 Hess was re-interred in the cemetery of Kinneret.
XVI, 239, [1] pp; approx. 18.5 cm. Missing cover. Good-fair condition. Library stamps. Many stains. Inscriptions on most of the leaves (most of them in color pencil, some of them in pen). Several small tears along the edges of the leaves. New, elegant cloth binding.

A letter and two booklets of the Hovevei Zion Association in England. London, 1880s-1890s. Hebrew and English.
A letter handwritten on the official stationery of the Hovevei Zion Association in London, "To the leaders of the community and to its rabbis". London, [1880s]. Hebrew.
The letter calls the leaders of the communities of England to establish associations of Hovevei Zion and support the settlers of Palestine: "And hereby we have come to ask you too, our honorable brothers, to awaken to the calling voice and establish in your city a Hovevei Zion association. And every man will donate money to the treasury of the association every year as his heart prompts him".
The letter was presumably written in proximity to the Katowice Conference (1884), where it was decided, among other things, to establish a central committee of all Hovevei Zion Associations which was to be named "Mazkeret Moshe". The letter refers to the members of Hovevei Zion Association in London, among them Kalman Wollrauch, who was the representative of the London Association to the Katowice Conference.
The lower part of the second page of the letter is cut out and missing (on it appeared, presumably, the signature of its senders).
[1] A folded leaf (two written pages. Part of the second page is missing), approx. 20x25cm. Good condition. Creases and stains (a large stain on the first page).
2. Eastern Palestine, A lecture delivered for the western tent of the Chovevi Zion Association by Claude Reignier Conder. London, Chovevei Zion Association, 1892. English.
A booklet containing the text of a lecture about Palestine delivered by the scholar Claude Reignier Conder to the Hovevei Zion Association of London in 1892.
Claude Reignier Conder (1848-1910) was a British soldier and explorer. During the 1870s, he headed a research expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund which surveyed Palestine west to the Jordan River.
36 pp, 22cm. Good condition. Stains. Small tears to the cover.
3. Issue no. 9 of Palestina – the Chovevei Zion Quarterly. London: Chovevei Zion Association, September 1894. English.
The issue contains articles about the settlement of Palestine and about Hovevi Zion in Russia, quarterly reports, and more.

MiMizrach… [From the East (First letter about Zionism)], by Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines – a printed pamphlet. Lida (Belarus), Kislev 1908.
An open letter by the chairman of the "HaMizrachi" movement, Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines, calling to increase the activity of the movement. In the letter, Reines summarizes his ideological conception, according to which religion and Zionism are interconnected. He emphasizes the two holy duties of the "HaMizrachi" movement: the first, "to disseminate Judaism among the Hebrew nation in general and its youth in particular"; and the second, "to make the best efforts to buy land in Palestine and make preparations for its settlement".
Yitzchak Ya'akov Reines (1839-1915), a Lithuanian rabbi, established the "Torah and Science" yeshiva which combined general studies with religious ones. He was an enthusiastic Chovev Zion (lover of Zion) and one of the founders of "HaMizrachi" movement. He was deeply affected by the Zionist-religious doctrine of Rabbi Zvi Kalischer and Rabbi Shmuel Mohilever.
