Anti-Semitic Pipe – Germany, 19th Century

Opening: $4,000
Unsold
Anti-Semitic pipe, hand-carved, made by Fr. Rosenstiel. Berlin, [c. 1880]. Carved Bakelite; carved wood; amber mouthpiece.
In the center of the pipe is an engraving of two Jews sitting on a bench. Behind the bench is a sign upon which is engraved: "Carlsbaden Idylle". Apparently, the scene is referring to the Jewish custom of visiting the Carlsbad baths (Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia).
