Terra Sancta quae in Sacris Terra Promissionis olim Palestina, map of Palestine. Hand-colored engraving from the Appendix Theatri Atlas by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. [Amsterdam, 1631 (the map is dated 1629)].
The map is west-oriented and depicts Palestine on both sides of the Jordan River. The shoreline stretches from Tripoli in the north to the Nile Delta. Pharaoh and his army are seen drowning in the Red Sea and broken lines depict the route of the Israelites in the desert. The title cartouche is flanked by Moses with the Tablets of the Law and Aaron in priestly attire.
The map is attributed to cartographer Jodocus Hondius II, who presumably created the engraved plate and sold it to Willem Janszoon Blaeu.
Latin text on verso, titled "Descriptio Palaestinae".
Engraved map: approx. 50X38 cm. Good condition. Creases and minor stains. Small tears to edges. Slight browning.
See Laor 106.
