Opening: $20,000
Sold for: $26,250
Including buyer's premium
52 posters of the Musֳ©e des Horreurs series - "the monstrosity exhibitions", which portrays Dreyfus and his supporters in a grotesque and animalistic manner. The posters were illustrated under the bogus name of V. Lenepveu. Lithographic print, hand painted, France, [1899-1900].
The posters were first published in autumn 1899 upon the opening of the world fair in Paris, and after Dreyfusג€™s retrial. The posters were advertised weekly until a year later, in which the advertisement of the series of posters was halted by instruction of the Ministry of Interior.
The entire series includes 51 posters, in which Dreyfus, ֳ‰mile Zola, Georges Picquart and others appear.
The collection includes an additional poster signed by the same artist as the other posters in the series, however, it does not belong to the famous series and differs in its content and design: the name of the series appears only on the bottom in small letters and in contrast to the other posters, in which an animal with the head of a human appears, this poster portrays a rape scene (see Kedem catalog no. 11 item 524; We were unable to find this poster in the collections which contain the ג€œcompleteג€ series).
An average of 65.5X50 cm. Condition varies, generally good, glued upon linen fabric for exhibition and preservation.
