Midrash Rabbah with commentary of Rashi, Matnot Kehunah, Yefeh To’ar and additional commentaries. First section [Bereshit-Shmot]. Vilnius, [1909]. Copy belonging to Rebbe Rabbi Yeshaya of Kerestir and son-in-law of his son Rebbe Rabbi Meir Yosef Rubin of Kerestir.
Ancient imprint upon front of binding “Yeshaya Steiner”. On leaf preceding title page handwritten notation: “Belongs to the righteous Rabbi Meir Yosef Rubin of Kerestir”.
Rebbe Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner (1852-1925, Encyclopedia of Hassidism II, pp. 496-498), known as Rabbi Yeshayala of Kerestir (named after town Kerestir in Hungary where he served as Rebbe), holy miracle worker, among righteous individuals of his generation. Personality admired by Jews of Hungary who flowed to him by the thousands in order to be blessed and granted a salvation. Was known for miracles which he performed; for example, story of harmful mice which miraculously disappeared from granaries of Jews after being blessed by him.
Rebbe Rabbi Meir Yosef Rubin (Encyclopedia of Hassidism III, pp. 67-68), from dynasty of Ropshitz, son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Steiner son of Rabbi Yeshaya of Kerestir. Appointed as Rebbe in Kerestir, succeeding his father-in-law who passed away approximately two years after the demise of his father. He too was known as a righteous miracle worker. Perished in Auschwitz in 1944.
