Nieuwe Kaart van Suriname vertonende de stromen en land-streken van Suriname, Comowini, Cottica, en Marawini. Map of Suriname, hand-colored. Amsterdam: J. Ottens, [early 18th century].
A detailed map of the northeastern part of the Dutch colony of Suriname in South America, identifying by name tens of plantation owners located near rivers and streams. East of the Suriname River is a settlement called "Ioods Dorp en Sinagoge" [Jewish town and synagogue], bordering plantations owned by Jews (with names of the plantation owners - Jews of Spanish and Portuguese ancestry).
The first Jewish settlers in Suriname, in the 17th century, were Marranos from Spain and Portugal. The Dutch granted rights to the Jews and allowed the establishment of an autonomous Jewish territory in Suriname called Jodensavanne (where the Jewish town of Joods Dorp was established). The local community engaged mostly in growing sugar cane.
Leaf 64X50 cm. Good condition. Some foxing, minor tears to the leaf's top margins. Two pieces of fabric glued to the back of the map, at the top margins.
