Manuscript, halachic question and response, questions by Rabbi Shmuel Ha-Levy and response by Rabbi Avraham Shuleima. [17th Century].
Question is about "the Marranos [from Spain]". A widow of one of them married illegally her husband's brother claiming that the first marriage was not according to Jewish law and the widow was, therefore, not forbidden to marry a member of the family. The question ends with the request "our Rabbi will examine the case and write his response… Shmuel".
Rabbi Avraham Shuleima forbids the marriage and ends his long response supporting the ban
on the brother, the woman and those who assist them.
The handwriting seems like a Sofer's but the ending looks like Rabbi Shmuel Ha-Levy' autographic writing.
The Ga'on Rabbi Avraham Shuleima, of the Venice rabbis and a leading Spanish sage in Italy, signed a response in Devar Shmuel (Abuhav) book of responsum, chapter 19, together with Rabbi Yehudah Aryeh of Modena and Rabbi Azaria Fijo author of "Gidulei Terumah".
About 40 written pages, approx. 20 cm. Good-fair condition, damages to borders, almost no text omission.
