Machzor Shaar Bat Rabim, Part I – weekday, Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh and festival prayers, according to the Ashkenazic rite, with the Hadrat Kodesh commentary by R. Yitzchak son of R. Yaakov Yosef HaLevi. Venice: Bragadin, [1711-1714].
Title page illustrated with fine engraving.
This elegant machzor was published at the initiative of the Italian communities, who undertook to buy the printed copies. The machzor was printed and sold in individual gatherings (as can be seen in this copy, where the gatherings are visibly sewn on separately and some are loose or detached).
Bound in an early cardboard binding coated in an early parchment manuscript, containing musical notation for the Latin Vulgate translation of Psalms (Psalm 23 of the Vulgate) on the back binding.
Copy of R. Yitzchak Berechiah Sanguinetti, an Italian rabbi, close disciple of the Zera Shimshon. The copy later passed into the ownership of R. Yitzchak Berechiah's disciple – R. Zechariah David Shabtai Segre.
At top of title page, ownership inscription handwritten by R. Yitzchak Berechiah: "Came into my possession, Yitzchak Berechiah son of R. Refael Yechiel Sanguinetti on Rosh Chodesh Elul… 1789".
Above his signature – signature of previous owner, partially faded: "Purchased by me, Shimon son of R. Zechariah".
Additional inscription (partially deleted) on purchase of the book in 1824 from Mrs. Guttele Sanguinetti [the widow of R. Yitzchak Berechiah], signed "Zechariah David Shabtai Segre" – R. Yitzchak Berechiah Sanguinetti's disciple.
On p. 3a, two lengthy inscriptions handwritten and signed by R. Yitzchak Berechiah Sanguinetti. One inscription on his mother's passing on 11th Cheshvan 1790, and the other on his father's passing on 13th Adar 1793.
Inside the book is a piece of paper, apparently handwritten by R. Yitzchak Berechiah, with a short homily on Bereshit 43: 23.
R. Yitzchak Berechiah Sanguinetti (ca. 1745-1824), an Italian rabbi, served initially in Turin and later in Vercelli. Disciple of his father R. Refael Yechiel Sanguinetti and close disciple of the kabbalist R. Shimshon Chaim Nachmani, author of Zera Shimshon, whom he quotes often in his works. Some of his manuscript works contain a warning not to take the work out of the possession of his disciple R. Zechariah David Shabtai Segre (whose signature appears in the present volume).
