Letters from Palestine: descriptive of a tour through Galilee and Judaea: to which are added, letters from Egypt, T.R. Jolliffe. London: Black, Young and Young, 1822. English. Two volumes.
Letters by British traveler Thomas Jolliffe, documenting his odyssey across Palestine and Egypt (the first volume comprises letters sent by Jolliffe to England from Palestine, and the second – letters he sent from Egypt). These volumes are illustrated with nine engraved plates – illustrations of places visited by Jolliffe (The Mount of Olives, Jehoshaphat Valley, the pyramids of Giza, and more), a map of the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea and two folding plans of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
The volumes contain addendums, including a historical review of the Ottoman Empire, a biography of Ali Pasha (1740-1822), who ruled the Pashalik of Yanina in the late 18th century, and a comprehensive description of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Vol. I: XII, 258 pp. + [6] plates; Vol. II: VII, 230, [1] pp. + [3] plates. 22.5 cm. Good condition. Stains and minor blemishes. Uneven edges. Several unopened sheets. Pen notations on inside front boards. Card bindings, with leather spines, slightly worn. Tears to spine, some of them open.
