Helmar Lerski (1871-1956), born in Strasbourg, worked in Switzerland, the USA, Germany and Palestine. He was one of the most important photographers of the 1930s and 1940s in Palestine and gained an international reputation as a still photographer and a cinematographer. He was known for his closeup portrait photographs, characterized by strong contrast between light and shadow.
