Opening: $1,000
Unsold
Report issued by the union of Jewish congregations in the Kingdom of Lombardo-Veneto. The delegation went to Vienna to meet with the heads of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. [Italy, 1843]. Italian.
Handwritten report, concluding the visit of the Jewish delegation in Vienna between May 29 and July 21, 1843. The goal of this visit was to present the abuse of rights granted to Jews in the Lombardo-Veneto area under the authority of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and a request to resume the rights granted to Jews during the emancipation of the late 18th cent.
The document outlines the new prohibitions imposed on Jews and the violation of rights (amongst them forbidding legal activity and the pharmaceutical profession, forbidding permanent residence for "new" families, forbidding Jewish teachers to teach non-Jews, and more). In addition the document describes in detail the difficulty with which the members of the delegation were faced while trying to meet relevant role holders in the Austro-Hungarian government , and meeting with key figures like, for example, Baron Salomon Rothschild (who met, on behalf of the delegation, the Foreign Minister of the Empire, Prince Klemens von Metternich). 29 written pp, 30 cm. Good condition. Staining. Minor tears.
