The literary monthly was founded as a counter-balance to "HaShachar", Peretz Smolenskin's periodical. In 1874-1875 Smolenskin started to publish in his monthly the composition "Et LaTa'at", attacking fiercely Berlin's Haskalah founded by Moshe Mendelsohn.
