Esther scroll. [Italy, 18th or 19th century].

Ink and paint on parchment; turned wood.

Esther scroll written on 5 parchment membranes sewn together, 19 text columns, 23 lines per column, with serifs (Tagim).
Around the first two text columns are hand-colored illustrations – apparently dating to the late 19th or early 20th century – including colorful vines, a seven-branched menorah, a hanging Sabbath lamp in Italian style, and a rectangular plaque with a Holy Name. Rolled on a wooden rod with knob at top and bottom (without handle).

Height of parchment: 24 cm. Height of handle: 32.5 cm. Overall good condition. Stains. Light tears to some membranes and seams. Cracks to wooden rod; may have originally included a wooden handle.
