Embroidered Fabric - "Wealth and Riches are in His House" - Verses from Psalms
Opening: $800
Unsold
Embroidered fabric, with decorations and Biblical verses. Unknown place [Ottoman Empire?, first half of the 20th century].
Gilded metallic thread and cotton thread embroidery on silk and cotton fabrics.
Oblong sheet of fabric, apparently used as a tablecloth. Embroidered on the margins are parts of the verses "Sit at my right hand" (Psalms 110, 1) and "Wealth and riches are in his house" (Psalms 112, 3); between the verses are tree decorations. The surface is embroidered with a repetitive pattern of a shepherd (apparently meant as the likeness of King David) surrounded by sheep, petting a sheep with his left hand and holding a lamb in his right hand. Embroidered in the center of the sheet are three harp-shaped decorations. Possibly, this fabric was embroidered and sent as a gift to a donor or patron.
Length: approx. 50 cm, width: approx. 103 cm. Fair condition. Numerous stains. Folding marks. Unraveled threads.
